Ravel Menuet sur le nom Haydn
Mozart Violin Concerto No 4
Haydn Symphony No 52 in C minor
While still in his teens, Mozart was appointed concertmaster in the Prince-Archbishop of Salzburg’s orchestra. It was during this appointment, in 1775, that he penned all five of his violin concertos. The fourth concerto is an effervescent favourite of violinists and audiences, infused with Mozart’s effortless operatic sense of melody. To perform it, we are joined by violinist Sophie Rowell.
MCO continues its survey of Haydn’s extraordinary symphonic legacy with a rare performance of his dramatic Symphony No 52, which we’ve nicknamed The Grandfather.
Recently appointed Concertmaster with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, violinist Sophie Rowell has had an extensive performing career as a soloist, chamber musician and principal orchestral violinist both in Australia and abroad.
After winning the ABC Young Performer’s Award in 2000 which resulted in solo performances with all major Australian symphony orchestras, Sophie founded the Tankstream Quartet which won string quartet competitions in Cremona and Osaka.
